It’s 1984, and Scott Fagan (The guy who customized guitars for Gibson under the ‘designer’ series made in 83-85) is doing a custom model for Gibson endorser, and rockstar Mattias Jabs of The Scorpions. Scott always had between 10-20 guitars in his private shop in Nashville that he was working on for Gibson’s Designer series.
The ultra-rare lefty guitar you see here, was being completed when he was informed that Gibson Guitar corp was sold to new owners, and his series was henceforth discontinued. Whatever guitars he had at his shop were part of his ‘severance’ package.
Fast forward 30 years, and we bring you one of these Severance Explorers in ‘natural relic’ condition, having being toured up until a few years ago when we acquired it. The Bigsby was added during those touring years and, because it is the most playable Bigsby we’ve ever felt, it was a no-brainer to keep it. So now here it is with no breaks or repairs, and just enough dinks and genuine adrenaline-spiked-sweat playing wear to convey a ton of white-nicotined-to-cream, Mojo. A good set-up and fret re-dress later and it plays great, and, I honestly think, looks amazing.
